The dimensions of a Heartland Pergola refer to the width and depth of the pergola's roof. The pergola roof will include the beams and rafters, and on a traditional style pergola, will extend past the posts of your pergola.
For an example, a 14' x 14' pergola means that the overhead roof dimensions are 14' x 14'.
To figure out post spacing you will want to look at the specific CAD drawing for the pergola size you are looking for. Noting that a typical traditional style pergola will be built with the posts inset one foot from the end of your beams. Modern pergolas will NOT have an overhang.
Tip while planning - if your patio space is 14' x 14', most homeowners will opt to go a size larger on a Traditional Style Pergola so that the overhang of the pergola roof extends past the edge of your patio, rather than stopping even with it. A 14' x 14' patio would benefit from installing a 16' x 16' pergola (or greater) for optimum sun coverage.
All of our pergola structures are listed in size by their Depth x Width. So when you see a pergola listed as 12'x14' - that means the depth of the pergola is 12' and the width is 14'.
The width and depth will tell you the dimensions your pergola roof will occupy.
The “width” of your pergola indicates the length of the beams (the supports that sit directly atop the posts or columns) and the purlins (the angled shade pieces).
The “depth” of your pergola refers to the length of the rafters (which lie crossways on top of the beams).
It is important to make sure you have your width & depth correct when ordering anything other than a perfect square as this will affect the orientation of your purlins which can affect the amount of sun that is being blocked. If you are unsure, please contact us for clarification. Happy to help!
Absolutely!
We will fabricate your pergola to your specific needs and have a very versatile system that makes it easy to custom fit your space.
The best way to do this is to contact our team by email or phone to go over your specific design & layout. We will help you plan and design the pergola to fit your needs.
Frequent customizations include (but not limited to):
Large Pergolas – Our online pergola builder tool does have a limit to the width and depth sizes you can order online, however, larger pergolas are certainly doable, they just require additional posts to support the added size. We can get you a quote on any size pergola you can dream up!
Custom Attachment Points – Have a unique space that requires attachment to your structure on more than one side? We have designed pergolas with multiple structural attachment points and even a pergola that had no posts, but was attached on both sides to a structure.
Custom Angles and Contours – Often times when following a patio or a deck, a pergola needs to be able to change angles, use additional posts, or have the rafters or purlins cut to mimic a curve.
Triangle Pergolas \ Corner Pergolas – Looking to cover a grilling area or create a cozy corner nook? We can fabricate a triangle pergola to fit your space.
Custom Shade Amounts – We can customize the amount of shade you are looking for, or even remove the shade purlins altogether if you prefer just a pretty structure with no shade.
Multi-tiered Pergolas – Really elevate your space with a pergola that spans over multiple tiers for additional visual interest.
Custom Shape Pergolas – we have created everything from octagons, triangles and unconventional pergola shapes.
In short – yes we can. If you know you will only need 8’ posts, or that you want your rafters cut 4” shorter, we can cut these to size, however we highly advise against it. We would hate to cut to a specific size and then upon receiving your kit, you discover a mismeasurement of your space, or find you are in need of some extra wiggle room to accommodate something you didn’t anticipate!
Shipping new pieces can be very costly as many of our pergola pieces are oversized and need to be shipped by LTL (semi truck).
All of our pieces are trimmable. A miter saw with a carbide blade can be used to cut through both the vinyl and the aluminum pieces. It’s typically better to trim on your own over having them trimmed to size here.
Feel free to discuss any questions or concerns with us prior to purchasing or shipping your pergola!
The primary function of our pergolas is to create shade and allow you to enjoy your outdoor space in the heat of the day. However where to place your pergola can be dependent on many factors.
Some people opt to attach their pergola to their home or structure over a deck or patio to provide shade on an outdoor living space.
Others add a pergola to a full outdoor landscape plan to create purpose and separation of different outdoor areas.
Some people are looking for more of an aesthetic and architectural value a pergola structure can bring to a garden or landscape and others are looking for the utility of shade for outdoor dining, outdoor kitchen or outdoor living spaces.
We are happy to take a look at a photo of your space along with your primary concerns to help you with the placement of your pergola. We also work with landscape professionals and would be happy to talk to your landscape architect or general contractor to offer ideas on the best placement of your pergola in your back yard.
Our standard posts are 10’ tall and based on a standard installation, would give you a floor to beam clearance of 8’ to 10’. If you need a longer post to create a taller pergola, we can customize your pergola kit to include a longer pergola post. There is an additional charge for the additional length of your posts and will be dependent on the number of posts your pergola needs (freestanding vs attached). Just send us a message and we can send over that quote to you quickly!
All posts are trimmable, both the aluminum inserts as well as the vinyl sleeves. If you are cutting your posts shorter to sit on top of a landscape column, outdoor bar top or outdoor kitchen top, you would not need to special order your posts. You can use a miter saw with a carbide blade to trim these pieces to their needed height.
Pergola shade is at its optimum level when the sun is overhead during the midday hours. But when the pergola is installed with the purlins angled against the direction of problematic sun, they can provide longer durations of shade as the sun moves through the sky.
To achieve the most shade from your pergola you should consider facing your pergola so that your purlins run parallel to the problematic sun direction.
You want your purlins to tilt AWAY from the problematic sun direction as well. Tilting the louvers away creates the most surface area towards the sun, resulting in the best shade quality below your pergola!
For many people in the Northern hemisphere, the South or West exposure to the sun is going to be the most problematic. But it all depends on what your goal is and how your outdoor space sits relative to the sun. We have had some people choose to block early morning sun in which case their purlins ran parallel to the East and the tops were tipped towards the West. If you are unsure, give us a call or send us a message with your space and the sun direction and we can help you choose!
Our pergolas currently come in White, Sandstone Tan and Black.
A white pergola pops against jewel tone colors like dark blue or green home and goes great with a home that already has white trim.
A darker home with tan, beige or brown trim, siding or brick often goes well with our Sandstone Tan color.
Black has been a popular request for more modern homes with dark accents, black window trim or just a more contemporary look.
If you are unsure, you can request a color sample. We will mail you a vinyl piece of each color for you to compare!
You can! There are vinyl paints out that that do allow you to paint your pergola in your choice of colors. We recommend Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint® (exterior acrylic latex) for a durable finish.
Keep in mind that painting nullifies one of the original perks of a vinyl pergola which is the low maintenance. In order to keep your pergola looking fresh and polished, you will need to re-paint it every couple of years.
Our pergolas are made with an engineered extruded aluminum frame on the inside and premium vinyl on the outside.
The structural components of our pergola system; the posts, beams and rafters are all reinforced with aluminum throughout. This framework is engineered to withstand high winds, will not rust and will never sag or warp like wood. The ½” thick heavy welded post base gives you a secure attachment to your deck, slab, footing or pillar.
Our premium vinyl carries the color all the way through. It’s easy to clean and requires little to no maintenance. It will never chalk, pit, discolor or become brittle.
We have fixed louvred ‘purlins’ which create the shade below your pergola. These angled purlins can be ordered for 50%, 75% or 90% shade. The level of shade is created by the spacing of the angled purlins.
Since these are fixed in place, the shade can not be adjusted or changed once installed unless removing and adding a new purlin holder to change the level of shade created.
We have the best of both worlds!
Aluminum base structure for extreme durability and strength paired with a vinyl exterior that makes your pergola maintenance super easy!
Many vinyl pergolas on the market are going to have no reinforcement or internal reinforcement by wood. Over time, that wood will rot, warp and sag. The aluminum inserts of Heartland Pergolas ensure that is never an issue for your pergola. It's a solid structure, easy to maintain and will last you for decades! We are so confidant in that fact that we offer a Lifetime Warranty.
Hurricane Clips are an additional aluminum L-bracket that attaches each rafter to the beam. This additional attachment point gives an additional wind warranty to the original purchaser of the pergola kit. They are recommended for hurricane prone costal areas.
They are not necessary for most other locations but can be added to any pergola in any location if desired.
Read more about our Lifetime Warranty and Pergola Wind Warranty.
These optional L-Shape brackets are another means of attaching the beams to the post. It eliminates the step of pre-drilling through the face of the beam. The brackets attach to the beam first, then into the aluminum post mount.
While not necessary, some prefer this method of installation as well as the clean outer look of the undisturbed beams when using beam attachment brackets.
A fan mount kit is an aluminum structural piece sleeved in vinyl that attaches between two rafters. A fan mount can be used for several purposes. The obvious is for installing an outdoor ceiling fan to your pergola. The hollow aluminum allows you to feed electrical wire through your pergola and fan mount to power your fan.
You can install one or more of these for items like fans, pendant lights, tv mounts, heater mounts etc.
Each fan mount kit includes two rafter hangers to mount the fan kit between your rafters. 3/8” x 1” hex screws are included to attach your fan kit. Two vinyl trim rings are also included to conceal the rafter hangers.
Yes! Our kits have undergone a thorough FEA analysis by an independent structural engineering firm. The results helped us to design our pergolas to withstand very high wind loads.
We are so confident in their structural soundness that we warranty our kits against wind damage. You can read more about our wind warranty.
We have our standard kit stamped engineered drawings and can obtain custom stamped engineered stamped drawings if needed.
Bring it on!
All Heartland Pergolas have an internal aluminum frame. That means they won’t sag or fail in extreme hot or cold weather.
The vinyl exterior is thick and durable enough that you don’t have to worry about deforming in the summer heat OR cracking in extreme cold.
It’s a pergola system that is perfect for all locations and environments!
Your kit is going to include almost everything you need to assemble your pergola. Any fastener required to assemble the pergola pieces are all included in every kit.
However, the fasteners necessary for the post mount/ column base to your surface as well as the ledger plate (attached pergolas and eyebrow pergolas) are NOT going to be included in your kit.
The reason we do not include these fasteners is because the post base or ledger plate surfaces can be of different materials, it will be important to get a fastener made for your specific type of material you are attaching to!
We have fixed louvered ‘purlins’ which create the shade below your pergola. These angled purlins can be ordered for 50%, 75% or 90% shade. The level of shade is created by the spacing of the angled purlins.
Since these are fixed in place, the shade can not be adjusted or changed once installed unless removing and adding a new purlin holder to change the level of shade created.
Our shade pergola roof does not open and close. We have fixed louvred ‘purlins’ that create the shade below your pergola. These purlins are installed at an angle in one of three configurations; 50%, 75% or 90% shade. The level of shade is created by the spacing of the angled purlins.
On our 50% Shade option, the purlins are installed 6” on center. On the 75% Shade option, purlins are installed 4” on center. And on the 90% Shade option, the purlins are installed 3” on center.
Since these are fixed in place, the shade cannot be adjusted or changed once installed unless removing and adding a new purlin holder that changes the spacing distance between purlins.
Our Elements Rain Proof Pergolas have a solid polycarbonate roof that is affixed over your pergola's structure and does not open and close without full removal of the roof panels.
Our Elements Rain Proof Pergolas are designed with a solid roof to block both sun, uv rays and rain!
For those looking to add protection from the rain can install different materials like plexiglass / polycarbonate or Lexan panels to the roof of your pergola. There are many different plastic sheet and panel distributors out there to choose from.
We recommend adding a slight slope to the pergola roof in the direction you prefer rainwater to drain. In addition, be aware that the solid roof will retain snow. While our testing has shown our pergola roofs to be very resilient under snow loads, Heartland Pergolas will not warranty damage caused by the accumulation of heavy snow if a solid roof is installed.
If you live in an area with large snow falls, please be sure to talk to our team about your intended use of solid panels on the roof.
Yes - If you would like to see the quality of our materials, we can send you a sample kit! The sample kit will include a 6" cut of our 2x6 vinyl and aluminum profiles. You can also choose the vinyl color you wish to see for your home!

Our full-size pergolas arrive to you within 3 weeks. We allow for two weeks of custom fabrication and 1 week for shipping via LTL.
Our eyebrow pergola kits are shipped via UPS and typically arrive in one week.
You will receive shipping information on both to be able to track and manage your delivery!
As you can imagine, shipping a full size pergola is a little different than recieving a small Amazon package. Please read read through this information to understand the shipping process before you order! Full size pergolas are shipped by freight via LTL (less than truckload). In other words by semi truck!
To understand the unloading process please read the instructions and watch our hand unloading video below!
Any full size pergola is going to be palletized and boat wrapped for shipping. These pallets are large, often times 16-25’ in length. They are shipped LTL – which is by truck or semi. A truck will be delivering your pergola pallet to your home.
NOTE: If your road or neighborhood cannot sustain a large truck or semi, please let us know at the time of ordering!
Shipping times will be communicated to you ahead of time and there must be someone present to accept and unload your pergola at the time arranged.
There are three methods of unloading your pergola kit: White Glove Delivery, Forklift, or Hand Unload.
White Glove Delivery: Trucking companies can offer White Glove Delivery Service, in which they will unload your pergola for you but that is an additional charge through the freight company – it is often more economical to hire someone locally to unload this for you versus using the freight company’s service. If you are interested in this service you must communicate that to the freight company at the time they call to schedule delivery.
Forklift: For outdoor professionals, we encourage you to use your forklift to unload the truck if you have one on hand. If not, you’ll need to follow the same procedure as our residential customers to hand unload – unpack each piece and verify it against your packing list.
Hand Unload: Your typical residence will not have a forklift to remove the pallet from the truck so most homeowners will need to hand unload the pergola. Watch the short video or read through the instructions below. This process should take two able bodied adults 10-15 minutes.
If you find any damage or missing pieces please do not reject your shipment! Take a photo of the damaged piece(s) and contact us. Our team will get replacement parts out to you right away and at no additional cost. Rejecting a shipment will incur return shipping fees and large delays in getting you your pergola!
Watch the hand unloading process in this short video for reference.
You can! If you are close enough to make the drive to our Davenport, IA fabrication shop, you can bring a trailer to pick up your pergola when it is ready. Please let us know ahead of time that you want to pick up so the details can be arranged. Our crew will load the pergola for you.
Please note that all pergolas are palletized and boat wrapped to protect the pergola pieces. These pallets are typically 16’-25’ long. We can give you exact dimension of your pallet ahead of time so you can plan your truck/trailer accordingly.
Please recognize that although we have wonderful reviews and pride ourselves on our customer service – we are still human and the care of the shipping company is out of our hands. While damage or missing items is not common, if anything is damaged or incorrect we will take care of it right away (within 24 hours)! Take photos of the damage to help us see what the issue is and which pieces are affected. Do not reject your delivery!
Then call 563-345-6745 to let us know, and we’ll get replacement parts to you as quickly as possible at no cost to you – even if we have to remake your entire kit. There’s no need to file a claim with the carrier – we’ll take care of everything.
You must notify us of damaged parts within 24 hours of the received the shipment.
Replacement purlins or purlin holders - these vinyl only pieces are the most susceptible to damage in the shipping process. If these are damaged, whether our fault or yours, these will be shipped out to you via UPS in 6' or less increments that will be installed by splicing together the shorter pieces.
Shipping these pieces as shorter spliced sections ensures you get your replacement pieces quickly and with no additional damage! Spliced vinyl pieces are easy to install and you can review our purlin splice PDF for details. Spliced vinyl pieces will not affect the look or stability of your pergola.
For all orders in the continental US, shipping is already included!

Yes! Please see our Traditional Pergola Installation guide.
Si! Consulte nuestra Guia de Instalacionde Pergolas Tradicionales a continuacion.
If you are installing the pergola yourself, most DIYers can have it completed in under 2 days. If you need to pour concrete footings, this will increase your time a little to form and set the concrete prior to installation.
A professional contractor or handyman can often finish the project in a day or less.
We always advise not to install your pergola last minute for a special event; party, wedding, graduation, etc. Particularly as a DIYer – give yourself a couple weeks buffer between installation & your event to ensure there are no delays between shipping, installation errors, inclement weather etc.
Our pergolas look GREAT on a paver patio! But proper installation requires that you install your posts on a 4” minimum concrete slab or on concrete footings. Attaching to the top of patio pavers is not safe or considered proper installation of your pergola.
If you are starting your entire landscape project from scratch, typically you will put your footings in and install the pergola posts first, then lay your pavers for the patio.
If you are working on an existing paver patio, you will want to pull up the pavers where your posts need to go, add in your footings and install your posts, then add your pavers back in around your posts.
Yes – our pergolas are a great option for a deck! The aluminum & vinyl combination are light enough to be installed on a deck without additional support needed. You can also integrate your pergola’s posts into your deck railing for a seamless look and to keep your deck space unobstructed.
While you should not need additional beam support on a properly built deck, you do need to have blocking installed below the flooring of your deck where your posts will be mounted. Minimum blocking thickness of 3" (this is two 2x10's thick).
Inset mount as necessary to ensure post skirt does not overhang edge of decking
Ensure Minimum of 4 nails on each side of 2 by block
For your post mount Fasteners use Carriage Bolts or ledger attachment screw (5" Recommended) and Use composite shims as necessary to plumb mount. Tighten fasteners.
The durable vinyl exterior of your Heartland Pergola will maintain its beauty for years to come. For spring cleaning of dirt and grime, mix a basic all-purpose cleaner such as Simple Green® with hot water, then scrub with a soft bristle brush. You can also tackle hard-to-clean stains or scuff marks with a Mr. Clean® Magic Eraser®.
Yes! A power washer is an excellent way to avoid any brush cleaning as well as get hard to reach places around your purlin holders and purlins.
Please take into consideration the power of your machine. There are commercial power washers that are strong enough to remove the paint off your new car. Start back at a distance on a low-pressure spray and work your way up if needed. Too much pressure, or moving the spray nozzle too close to the vinyl can damage it. You might be surprised to find out how well a normal hose with a good spray nozzle works too!
For most people, it’s just as needed.
Rain may splash up dirt and mud along the bottom of your posts. Dust may accumulate and then turn to dirt and grime around your purlins and top roof section of your pergola. This usually just requires a quick spray down of the hose when noticed. Some people choose to do a yearly or bi-yearly power wash as part of their Spring and Fall outdoor cleaning routine.
Traditional pergolas are notorious for being part of large sprawling gardens and they provided shade by being covered in thick vines and climbing plants.
Vines can increase the amount of shade your pergola provides and enhance the natural beauty of the structure.
Do avoid woody vines however. Woody vines such as wisteria or English Ivy can undermine the structural integrity of your pergola.

Well, maybe not all pergolas, but ours sure can! We have engineered our pergola system to be robust and durable against strong winds. You can find many of our pergolas in Florida and other coastal regions that are affected by hurricanes and tropical storms.
For those who live in coastal communities where hurricanes are a factor, we suggest our hurricane clips. When purchased and installed properly, hurricane clips reinforce the attachment points of your rafters to the beams.
In engineering tests, Heartland Pergolas with hurricane clips that are properly anchored into a wood deck are rated for winds up to 115 mph, while pergolas properly anchored in via concrete are rated for winds up to 150mph! So, a properly installed Heartland Pergola can withstand a category 3 or 4 hurricane!
We do have people who have attached clear plexiglass or Lexan panels to their pergola roof to add a little protection from the elements. Others have attached solar panels to the roof structure.
We recommend adding a slight slope to the pergola roof in the direction you prefer rainwater to drain. In addition, be aware that the solid roof will retain snow fall. While our testing has shown our pergola roofs to be very resilient under load, Heartland Pergolas will not warrant damage caused by the accumulation of extremely heavy snow when a third party roofing system is used.
Unfortunately, no. Our pergola kits are designed to provide shade and sun protection but are not built to handle a moving force like a swing or hammock. If you are looking for a structure that can accommodate these features, contact an estimator to find out about creating a custom pergola to meet your needs!
We encourage you to make your pergola work for your outdoor space, adding all of the outdoor living comforts to your pergola! The internal aluminum of our posts, rafters and beams can accommodate a variety of outdoor products. If you have questions about a specific item for your pergola feel free to ask. But here are some common additions people choose to affix to their pergola.
Ceiling Fans – This one is a definite yes! We even sell the mounting kit for our pergolas. An outdoor fan for your pergola is a great way to add some air flow on days where the heat is just stagnant. Look for an outdoor ceiling fan that is specifically wet-rated for outdoor use!
Lighting – Absolutely - It can be as simple as a strand of bistro lights or you can add light sconces to the posts or hang pendant lights from your pergola. Our fan mount kits work well for installing a pendant light or outdoor chandelier from the center of your pergola!
Outdoor Heaters – with careful consideration of placement, outdoor heaters can be mounted to your pergola’s beams for enjoyment on cool nights. Make sure that the direction of your heater is always facing away from any part of your pergola’s structure. Like vinyl siding, a heat source too close to the vinyl can warp the vinyl exterior.
Outdoor Speakers & TVs – Yes, you can dance the night away under your pergola. Outdoor speakers can be mounted to your pergola for musical enjoyment. Or watch the big game outdoors on your outdoor TV set up!
Outdoor Misters – Yes! If you are looking for additional ways to really cool off this summer, consider adding an outdoor mister to your pergola!
Climbing plants – Add traditional charm to your pergola with climbing plants. These can certainly add a lot of shade, color and enjoyment to your space. Do try to avoid woody vines which can affect the structural integrity of your pergola over time.
Swings or hammocks – The engineering for our standard pergola kits is not designed to handle a moving force like a swing or hammock. If you are looking for a structure that can accommodate these features, contact us to find out about creating a custom pergola to meet your needs!
Outdoor kitchens are continuing to increase in popularity, we see many homeowners now opting to add a pergola over their outdoor kitchen spaces. So it safe to grill under your pergola? Use common sense when grilling, much like you would not grill up against vinyl siding, you need to be cognizant of how close your freestanding grill is to the vinyl posts of your pergola. If you can stay a good 18-24” away from the vinyl posts, you should be okay.
Most grills that are part of a outdoor kitchen are set within a permanent countertop with sufficient space between the emitting heat and any of the vinyl components of the pergola.
Gas burning fire tables sit low enough that normal usage should not be a problem. Wood burning firepits should be closely monitored to not let the flames get too high to be within 24" of your pergola's roof. And to watch for strong winds that may blow flames towards your pergolas posts.
Unfortunately, the answer to this question will depend on your local municipalities rules and regulations. Often attached pergolas will need a permit, while free standing pergolas are less likely but always check with your city or county first!
Our pergolas have stamped engineered drawings and CAD files that can be provided to you, your builder or contractor and the city. Our drawings typically have no issue getting full approval when submitted, however we can also obtain an engineered wet stamp signed and sealed document for custom designs or requirements as needed.
We already have a dry stamped signed and sealed pergola drawing for all of our standard sizes - viable for all 50 states!
With custom designs, custom installations or special rules and regulations, we do have the ability to get a wet stamp signed and sealed document as needed. A specific engineering wet stamp may likely incur additional costs to have an engineer review and approve designs. Please talk to us directly about the needs and possibility for a custom Engineering Stamp with our team. We have worked with many builders, contractors and outdoor professionals to make our pergolas fit for your requirements.

While we can’t speak to other pergolas on the market, our pergolas were designed with shade in mind!
Not all spaces are created equal, so our pergolas come in three different shade levels for you to choose from! 50% Shade (purlins 6” on center spacing), 75% Shade (purlins 4” on center spacing) or 90% Shade (purlins 3” on center spacing).
This is real shade from overhead sun! The shade created helps make your outdoor space more livable! It cuts down the heat you feel and uv light on your space (and into your home in some cases).
We do!
