Heartland Pergola Review: A DIY Vinyl Pergola Kit in East Texas
At Heartland Pergolas, we love letting our customers tell their own stories. Any company can talk up their products, but real reviews from homeowners show what it’s like to buy, build, and enjoy one of our pergolas.
That’s why we’re excited to share Richard’s story. He and his wife from East Texas installed their very own DIY vinyl pergola kit and sent us photos and feedback about their experience.
DIY Pergola Kits: Richard’s Story in Texas
Living in Texas means hot, sunny days — and Richard and his wife wanted more shade for their patio so they could enjoy the outdoors even in the heat. In mid-April, they ordered a freestanding 16×20 Heartland Traditional Shade Pergola Kit in white vinyl with 7-inch post columns and the 90% shade option.

Fabricated in our Midwest shop, their custom pergola shipped just 11 days later and arrived at their East Texas home two days after that.
Richard writes:
“I just wanted to follow up with you on our Heartland Pergola build that my wife and I completed shortly after our Heartland pergola arrived. I wanted to share some photos with you and let you know that all went well in the installation. My wife and I installed our 20×16 Heartland pergola kit ourselves — no problem. It only took us 4 days to complete. We took our time, mostly because we are 67 and 66 years old respectively, and there was a lot of ladder work, but it was fun to see this project progress without any issues whatsoever. We LOVE our Heartland Pergola!”
Pretty inspiring — and proof that a DIY pergola kit really is manageable, even for first-time installers.

The Benefits of Vinyl Pergolas
Richard carefully followed our written instructions and video tutorials to complete the build. One of the biggest advantages he noticed? Maintenance-free vinyl.
He explains:
“One of the best aspects to our Heartland pergola is the fact that the white vinyl is so incredibly easy to maintain! There is virtually no maintenance needed. When we have moths that lay tiny little eggs on it, we just hose them off with our garden hose; piece of cake! We will NEVER have to stain or paint it, like people who have wood pergolas have to.”

Wood pergolas may be common in Texas, but they require regular staining, painting, and upkeep. A vinyl pergola means more time relaxing under shade — and less time working on maintenance.
A Hurricane-Proof Pergola for Peace of Mind
East Texas also sees its share of severe weather and strong winds. That’s why our optional hurricane clips are available for extra stability and safety. Richard’s pergola was engineered to withstand tough conditions, giving him confidence that his investment will last.

Shade That Keeps Cool in the Heat
Richard also noticed how the white vinyl finish helps with more than looks:
“Down here in East Texas we have plenty of sun, so the white vinyl is always nice to the touch — it doesn’t get hot no matter how much sun beats down on it. And, we never have to worry about it fading in the sun!”
Choosing a light-colored pergola helps reflect heat, keeping the shaded patio cool and comfortable all summer long.

DIY Pergola Installation Tips
Richard was proud to share his advice for other homeowners considering a DIY pergola kit:
“Suggest drilling pilot holes in the aluminum before attempting to install bolts and screws. The reason is that even though (Heartland) provided us with self-tapping screws, it took a LOT of muscle power to get those screws started going through the aluminum. Drilling pilot holes made installing those screws and bolts much easier!”
We agree — prepping on the ground whenever possible makes installation smoother and safer.

Heartland Pergola Reviews Speak for Themselves
Richard wrapped up his email with this:
“I would be happy to give Heartland Pergolas a formal testimonial — that’s how happy we are with our pergola and the entire experience we’ve had with you.”

We think his words already say it all! His Heartland Pergola review shows just how rewarding a DIY vinyl pergola kit can be — from installation to everyday enjoyment.
Welcome to the Heartland Pergolas family, Richard. We’re thrilled that you and your wife now have a beautiful, hurricane-proof pergola to enjoy for years to come.
